There's nothing like riding a motorcycle in New England. Our changing seasons make it that much more exciting. Quaint country roads are particularly beautiful -- and particularly treacherous.
As riders we accept the added risk posed by riding on the open road. As riders, we should also accept the added responsibility of learning how to handle our bikes safely, re-educate ourselves to the rules of the road and abide by them. Then we can be confident in our abilities to avoid accidents.
Sometimes, accidents can't be avoided.
The most common reason for a multi-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle is that the driver of the other vehicle did not see the motorcycle. To increase safety for everyone, drivers should remember four things about sharing the road with motorcycles:
Motorcycles are entitled to the same privileges as any vehicle on the road.
Look out: Watch for motorcyclists on the highway and at intersections, and clearly signal your intentions for turns and lane changes.
Predict evasive actions: Obstructions like potholes or debris on the road can be deadly for a motorcyclist.
Keep enough room between you and the motorcyclist.
